The wet conditions meant neither side would be able to play expansive rugby and it was Edinburgh who took advantage of this with some hard running up the middle earning a well deserved 12-0 lead within the first fifteen minutes.Strathmore used the experience from their bench and rejigged the team at this point with half back Stewart Ross coming on along with rugby league debutant and Strathie stalwart Bruce Morrice. Some big runs from the young forwards, particularly loose forward Lee Alexander, and more direction from the half backs saw the Silverbacks build an 18-12 lead.
The team from the capital refused to give up though and Terry Skeet continued to cause havoc with barnstorming running. A well worked try made it 18-18 at half time.
Following the break Strathmore built a steady advantage with Captain Glenn Feighan leading the charge and Silverbacks debutant and Scotland Student Niall Hall standing out with some incisive carries. It was fellow debutant Jim Docherty who benefitted the most from the forwards effort by scoring a hat trick from the wing.
Edinburgh, who had travelled without substitutes, battled bravely and Scotland A veteran Gareth Walker directed play while keeping the home markers on their toes. However they couldn’t match the home sides intensity in the final quarter.
Final Score was 42-28 to the Silverbacks who know they’ll need to up their game for the return fixture.
