SCHOOLS
At Scotland Rugby League we see our school programme as a key aspect to growing the game in Scotland. The programme is designed to provide positive and engaging curricular and extracurricular experiences for school pupils, teachers and volunteers of all ages across Scotland.
Our key targets are –
- Offer a high quality, sports experience that aids in the recruitment, development and retention of players and volunteers of all ages.
- Build on or enhance the existing physical education and sports opportunities available to young people in schools.
- Increase the opportunities for participation in Rugby League for players, volunteers and school staff.
- Improve the school to club link, building the foundations for strong rugby league communities
Our secondary school programme is the first point of contact we have with school pupils and is designed to give them a taste of what rugby league has to offer. Over a period of 3 to 6 weeks our coaches work on basic rugby skills including movement, passing and tackling.
While ensuring we meet the targets of individual schools and the national GIRFEC (Getting it Right For Every Child) framework it is key for us to develop a programme that while robust is also sustainable. With this in mind all of our curricular sessions act as CPD opportunities for school teachers, meaning that once our coaches leave the school sessions or aspects of these can be replicated and built on by teachers.
These sessions act as the link step from no rugby to participating in school based rugby clubs and teams.
Our after-school clubs are designed as the bridge between curricular rugby league and club rugby league. All of our clubs are delivered by experienced club and SRL coaches and are open to all secondary school pupils regardless of age, gender or ability – there is something for everyone in rugby league!
It is very much or aim that secondary school teams will start to play competitive fixtures against each other with a view to relaunching a Scottish schools competition in the future.
As with our Curricular programme, to ensure sustainability of our after-school sessions and the wider game in Scotland we have just completed writing our ‘Start Coaching’ course. This will be ran with our partner schools to give senior pupils the opportunity to start their coaching pathway and support the delivery of school clubs.
Through partnership with Active Schools, their Sports leaders and Sports Ambassadors the start coaching course will also open up opportunities for senior pupils to delivery rugby league to their schools feeder primary’s.
We are currently working with secondary schools located close to our clubs and those that are working to launch or develop age grade teams. However, if your school would like to be involved in the Scottish Rugby League School Programme or the Start Coaching qualification please get in touch with our National Development Manager – James Sloggie James.Sloggie@ScotlandRL.com | Mobile: 07796 954 473
